Sony Xperia GX to start selling today in Japan

We’ve been hearing quite a lot about the Xperia GX ever since May, but for some reason Sony has delayed the new phone’s launch a couple of times already. The high-end Japan-bound flagship smartphone is, however, finally supposed to start shipping today, although NTT DoCoMo is still listing it as “not available”.
If you’re a resident of the “Land of the Rising Sun” and you’re on the hunt for a spanking new phone with a lot of oomph and a cool design, you should keep a close eye on NTT DoCoMo’s website, because we’re betting that by the end of the day the GX will in fact show up as “available”.
In the meantime, we should tell you about the new Xperia phone’s pricing, which has been kept under wraps by Sony until now. As far as we can tell (our Japanese is a bit rusty), the GX will be available outright for 75,390 yen (around $960) or for monthly payments of 3,010 yen (26 months) and 6,020 yen (14 months).
That is quite the hefty pricing from Sony and NTT DoCoMo, but the truth is the Xperia GX is one special phone. Also, you should keep in mind, before panicking too much, that Japan is currently one of the most expensive smartphone markets, so if and when the GX will cross the Ocean, it will most likely come at a much more budget-friendly price.

Speaking of which, we’re still in the dark when it comes to Sony’s global launch plans, as we don’t know yet if the Hayabusa is in fact the same phone as the GX, if this will be unveiled at the Berlin, and if the Japanese will have another super-phone ready for U.S. and European tech lovers soon (like the Mint, for example).
Oh, well, let’s concentrate on what would we do know for the time being and quickly recap the main features of the Xperia GX:
  • 4.6-inch LCD capacitive touchscreen with 1280 x 720 pixels resolution and 319 ppi pixel density
  • Dual-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Krait processor
  • 1 GB of RAM
  • 16 GB of on-board storage
  • MicroSD card slot for expanding the memory to up to 32 GB
  • 13 MP rear-facing camera with autofocus and LED Flash
  • 1.3 MP front-facing webcam
  • Scratch-resistant glass
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with Timescape UI
  • Sony Mobile Bravia Engine
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, DLNA, Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Bluetooth 3.1
  • HSDPA/HSUPA/LTE
  • TV-out (via MHL A/V link)
  • 1,700 mAh battery capable of running for up to 6.5 hours of 3G talk time
  • 127 grams weight
  • 131 x 69 x 8.6 mm dimensions
Anyone planning on picking this up in Japan? How about if it comes to the U.S. or Europe? And what would be a fair price to ask for it outside Asia?
